Medication Side Effects You Need to Be Wary Of

Medication use can be common, especially among our older population receiving personal care in Illinois. The intended effects of medications are to treat a certain ailment or to enhance the patient’s condition. While some of these side effects can be challenging to manage, others might not necessarily be problematic.

Knowing these typical side effects can be a major assistance later on for the patient and the entire family to be prepared and able to handle the situation as part of our home services. For the most part, serious side effects and complications are rare. But people taking medicines, undergoing surgery, or receiving a medical implant should be aware of potential side effects.

  • Weakened or painful muscles
Some elderly patients taking the statin medicine class report muscle aches or weakness. High cholesterol is treated with statins. To lessen the effect, the patient may choose a lower dose of the medication or consult their doctor about suggested supplements.
  • Nausea or lightheadedness
Anticholinergic medications, which are used to treat depression or nerve pain, can also lead to nausea, dizziness, and problems with balance. The patient may go over alternative therapies with their doctor or include safety precautions in their regular routine, especially after taking their medicine.

More common examples of mild adverse effects related to drugs include:

  • Constipation
  • Skin rash or dermatitis
  • Diarrhea
  • Drowsiness
  • Dry mouth

Make it a point to be aware of your loved one’s medication side effects so that you can ask for medical attention immediately. Feel free to ask our home care services for the assistance you require.
